Kerri Higgins and Graham Sheldon got married on August 15ht at McCurdy Park and the Museum of History and Industry MOHAI. It was a beautiful summer day with great sunlight and warm tempertures. Evin Morris and Van Dang were married on July 1st on board the lovely Skansonia Ferry on the north shore of Lake Union. It was a perfect day although it was predicted to be hot, and some areas around Seattle were close to 90F degrees, on board the Skansonia it was pleasant with a cool breeze coming in off the water.

Jennifer Ulrich and Paul Geoffrion were married on Whidbey Island at Freeland Hall on May 30th. I posted the large group wedding panoramic photograph earlier this week and promised to post a selection of the candid wedidng photos as well. So here it is Friday and I am only about 3/4 of the way through editing. I had an assignment in eastern Washington this week and lost 2 days i had hoped to be editing. Still have to finish up the reception photos. I thought I would pick out some of my favorite so far and present them now and then when I finish editing I will come back with another representative sample of all of the posed portraits and candid wedding photographs.

The bouquet was beautiful.

Paul begged for Jennifer’s hand. Actually this was after the ceremony while we were shooting the posed portrits. Paul was a hoot. Left are jennifer’s parents and right are Paul’s.

The actual ceremony with the service being lead by Patricia Stimac, outside Freeland Hall on Whidbey Island.

Coming down the aisle.

Paul enjoying a hot wing.

Paul signing the wedding license with his characteristic handwriting.

Jennifer enjoying the reception on the deck of Freeland Hall.

The wedding cake top with a representation of Paul and jennifer and their motorcycle.

On May 29th, Elizabeth and Jason were married around noon at Pioneer Park in Steilacoom, WA. It was in the middle of this great stretch of fantastic weather we have been having. My speciality is candid wedding photography and the vast majority of wedding photos I make are indeed candid photos, but I really like to capture the moment when everyone gets together and poses for the whole wedding panorama. Most people going to a wedding are not included in the wedding photos. I think they should be. This is the large group wedding panorama portrait of everyone at Elizabeth and Jason’s wedding. OK, well maybe it is not a large group, compared to some weddings where they have more than 400-500 in attendance, but is was large compared to the smaller groups of the family and wedding party. Elizabeth was so sweet and Jason , a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, getting ready to head out for Iraq soon, looked so correct and dashing in his formal dress uniform.

Seattle Wedding Photography Here are a couple of photographs besides the panoramas I made at the wedding of Craig and Katie March 7th. I was shooting it alongside Laurie Matanich and it was a lot of fun. They are such a great couple. These pictures taken before the group panoramas were made. It was a cold and snowy and rainy day at the Red Barn Studios near Chehalis Washington. Before it started to rain Laurie made the formal portraits outside under an overcast sky. When the rain and snow came later, we were all safe and warm in the 1937 gothic barn, a former dairy barn, turned into a unique venue for weddings other social gatherings by Laurie and her husband Jason.

Laurie shoots some group portraits.

Katie and Craig and their friends and family outside the Red Barn Studios near Chehalis Washington
In my previous post everyone at their wedding got together and posed for a group panorama portrait indoors on the spot where the ceremony had been held minutes before because we figured the weather was too cold and wet to go for the outdoors shot. At the time, it seemed like the best we could do under the circumstances. Afterwards every one went downstairs for the cocktail hour and I packed up my lights and camera. As I headed out to the car with my gear I noticed that there was a break in the weather. The rain and snow had stopped and the sun was almost out, just hiding behind a thin veil of clouds.
My confidence in the indoor shot was a little shaky and so when I saw the clear weather I consulted with Katie and Craig and they agreed to go for a second chance and got everyone out on the deck for a second large group wedding panorama. I wonder if you would help me decide which panorama you would chose to have printed and hang on you wall if it was your wedding panorama? Please leave comments below.
I really like these panoramas in black and white. Not that I have anything against color photography, most of what I do is in color digital. But these digital photographs are converted easily into black and white photographs. They have a timeless quality I like. They look like they could have bee made 50 years ago.
Any way I do not think black and white wedding photography will ever go out of style.

Katie and Craig and the people who came to their wedding
Katie and Craig were married at the Red Barn Studios near Chehalis Washington on Saturday March 7th. It was a cold and snowy and rainy day but we were all safe and warm in the 1937 gothic barn, a former dairy barn, turned into a unique venue for weddings other social gatherings by Jason and Laurie Dix who converted it with the help and support of friends and family.
Katie and Craig and their friends and family got together and posed for this group panorama portrait right after the ceremony right on the spot where the ceremony had been held minutes before. We figured the weather was too cold and wet to go for the outdoors shot we had talked about originally. We set up some additional lighting and it seem like the best we could do under the circumstances.
I was pleased when I saw the negative as I had some fears that it would have been filled with some nasty shadows. I could not really see the photograph since we were lighting it with strobe lights. The available lighting in the barn is kind of low for this old panorama camera which still uses rather slow black and white film for the photo.
To be continued…More photos from this wedding to come in the next day or so.

Stella and Rob wanted to get married in January in snow country. They wanted to ski an have fun with their friends and family and they choose the South Tyrol, the Italian Alps, to do it.
It was a winter wonderland. They had everybody hike up a mountain for an hour then watch their wedding ceremony, have a hot mull wine and dance. Then everyone hopped on a sled and flew down the mountain. It was fantastic and the weather was perfect.
Here is a selection of photos that tell the story.

And so it went. A fabulous wedding celebration.

Suzzanne and Kurts wedding last year on the Skansonia on Lake Union.
I started blogging last summer and tried a couple of different versions of blogging software including Blogspot and WordPress and finally settled on this style from WordPress. It is called the Ambiru theme originally designed by Phu. It has been further customized for a Beautiful Day Photography by Neetnet, the web design firm run by my wife Jana. She widened the format to allow for the much easier posting of large format photographs. That had been my gripe about the other themes available for blogging. There do not seem to be any off the shelf blog themes designed to show big pictures and that to me is primary for a photography blog of any sort. I am lucky to be married to a talented web developer. We will very soon be linking the website A Beautiful Day Photography to this blog as the official blog.

It has been a while since my last post. I have been away to a wedding in the Italian Alps in mid January and so between the holidays and the wedding in Italy and then Germany where I went after the wedding to stay with friends, I have been away from posting to this blog. I am back and plan to try and get up to date and finish posting Megan and JP’s photos and then start to post some of the Stella and Robert’s Alpine wedding. It was a real blast.
In the meantime I wanted to post this shot of Andrea and Eric who will be getting married in Minnesota this summer. They were out here for the holidays and asked me to make their engagement photo.

Tim Narby and Family = Note Bene Winery
Just taking a break for the wedding of Meghan and JP for an annual family photo shoot. Every year I for the past 4-5 years I have been asked to photograph Tim’s family photo which he then has Panda Lab print on a Christmas card. The cards are sent out to not just his friends and family but to subscribers and people signed up on the mailing list of his winery Note Bene. He makes really great bordeaux style wine from Washington state grapes and I look forward to getting this assignment from him every December. Right after the shoot he has an open house and I get to taste all of the 7-8 varieties he makes. What a treat.

Now back to Meghan and J.P ‘s wedding at the chapel at Seattle University, St Ignatius. Meghan teared up after getting ready when she saw her Dad. then she got ready and went to show JP what she looked like in the gown she brought back from Africa.

Got another commission for a family photograph from one of my former wedding clients Pam and Gary. They had a beautiful daughter Annabel this year and they will be sending this one out with their Seasons Greetings cards this Christmas.
They look so happy together.

The Kreinherder Family pose for their family portrait not far from their Queen Ann Home
I am often asked to photograph families in the course of my work as an wedding photographer, and approach it much as I would a portrait at a weddng or an editorial assignment for a magazine. Look for good light and with a straightforward approach, show them at their best. Janee and her family made the assignment fun and the rare November sunshine made it easy. Late afternoon filtered sunshine is one of my favorite light sources.

Adam smokes a cigarette just before he gets dressed before his wedding ceremony at Freeland Hall on Whidbey Island.
Wedding Photojournalism also known as Documentary Wedding Photography is here to stay. Many of the bridal magazines circulating today have conflicting information which only complicates a search for the right wedding photographer.
Often times when a bride looking to sort out the confusion over the term photojournalism needs only read a newspaper and see the storytelling photographs they publish. “Wedding Photojournalism” was coined by professional newspaper and magazine photojournalists to describe the kind of photography they practiced when they accepted commissions to photograph weddings. They were anxious to make sure people would distinguish the difference between the kind of photography they practiced in contrast to the traditional studio wedding photographers whose only work was almost entirely posed and highly styled wedding and portrait photography. Wedding Photojournalist’s work is best described as a documentary approach to wedding photography focusing on real moments, instead of staged moments. Instead of stopping action to get their staged posed shot, they stayed in the background and looked for real interactions and emotions that told the story of the day.
Wedding magazines soon picked up on the new trend and made it the “hot” fashion for wedding photography. This forced traditional wedding photographers to hop on the photojournalism bandwagon as well, including those without the real skills to do photojournalism. What they did was fake the “look” of photojournalism’s real moments by staging faked real moments that almost look like they are are real. the problem is the wedding couple still know every time they see the photo that was faked. Also adding to the confusion, several other styles developed during the same period – elements of fashion photography, beauty photography, and fine art photography were all being used in wedding photography.
Hiring a wedding photojournalist does not mean having to give up on having posed portraits at your wedding. Newspaper photographers have always been assigned to make been portraits of various subjects from movie stars to Presidents and the people next door since the first newspaper photographs were published. Most wedding photojournalists focus on relaxed portraiture – a directed image where the subject may or may not be looking at the camera. While such images may give the impression of being candid, a wedding photojournalist would never try to pass off the picture as a real moment. A wedding photographer to be successful today must dabble in several approaches in addition to newspaper photojournalism, for example mixing in some of the editorial fashion look and not just focusing on only one style in particular.
Some traditional photographers insisted photojournalism was merely a fad or a “buzzword.” But the buzz has persisted and many of the country’s top wedding photographers use a photojournalistic documentary approach. We are now past the point of calling photojournalism a fad. It’s simply what many brides want. With many newspapers across the country laying off their staff photographers due to the rise of the internet, many of the top wedding photojournalists nowadays come directly from the newspaper industry, where they were leaders in the photojournalism field and most of the experienced wedding photojournalists have a great understanding of their digital camera and computer equipment. Today’s discerning brides and grooms will pick the photographer that is right for them based on style and budget. For most of them, true to life real wedding photojournalism by a real photojournalist is the right choice for telling the story of their day.

With this design, the details in the pictures are now more apparent and easier to see. We hope you like the change.
